Photographer Steve Mitchell and I were just about to take photos of Drake's show at Deer Creek Verizon Wireless Klipsch Music Center. The official event info said we would shoot from the soundboard halfway up through the crowd, but for Waka Flocka Flame and J. Cole, the leadup acts, we were allowed into the pit right up at the stage. We assumed, therefore, that plans had changed (or there was a miscommunication) and we would be in the pit for Drake, as well. Our Klipsch escorter, Kimmy, had even talked with Drake's manager to make sure it was okay.
Then this big black guy with a headphone set and black polo shirt started pushing us out and pointed to the soundboard. Steve and I didn't know what to do. We got over to stage left, where Kimmy saw us, and Kimmy, as Drake walked onto the stage, yelled over the music that we could stay. Steve and I hurriedly took emergency photos in case it didn't work out, but fortunately it did. We stayed up there.
Thus, the images you see below, and the photos at IndyStar.com. By the way, Ryan Dorgan had a similar experience at last year's Little 500 concert with Lil Wayne. You should read about it. Again, good event staff pulled through for the photogs.
